The Public Art Fund

Community Foundation of the Lowcountry believes that not only do the arts provide a much needed social escape for many in our communities, they also help drive local economies and enrich educational landscapes.

Our Public Art Fund was established in 2006 with the mission of buying and installing art in public spaces. We partner with the Town of Hilton Head Island, donating sculptures to the town to be placed primarily on town-owned lands. The Town of Hilton Head Island also supports our Public Art Fund financially.

The first sculpture procured was Charles E. Fraser, located in Compass Rose Park. In 2011 the Public Art Fund presented its first Public Art Exhibition on Hilton Head Island and has done so, biennially, ever since -- except for the 2017 exhibition, which was postponed until 2018 due to the destruction caused by Hurricane Matthew.

To date, the Fund has acquired 11 sculptures and permanently installed nine (two sculptures are awaiting completion of their selected sites). Some have been Purchase Prize winners from the exhibition; some have been sculptures donated by artists participating in the exhibition; some have been purchased or donated by individuals and groups on Hilton Head Island.
