Earth Embracing the Sky

Ed Miller - Waynesboro, VA
Stainless Steel, Soil Cement, Sod - 12’ x 8’ x 8’

Ed Miller’s Earth Embracing the Sky combines figurative sculpture with landscape to create conversation between human beings and the natural world, and to even comment on environmental stewardship. This sculpture depicts a human figure holding up a circular form that reflects the earth and frames the sky in a circle, which dynamically changes given the changes in weather and light patterns: clouds will come and go across the circular form, changing its color; it will get dark with night, and light up again when the day comes. The work was first inspired by the myth of Atlas, but takes on more relevant content as it alludes to the responsibility of people to maintain the planet and cherish the beauty of the natural world.
