It's Time to Celebrate National Volunteer Month — April, 2019!

Nonprofits rely heavily on volunteers. In fact, many local nonprofits
simply could not function without the generous spirit of the people who donate their time and talent to local causes.

National Volunteer Month is the perfect time to honor the volunteers who make the nonprofit world go around. To celebrate, Community Foundation of the Lowcountry is launching our #LowcountryVolunteers2019 challenge.

#LowcountryVolunteers2019 Challenge

The challenge is a fun way to champion volunteerism and share with the world how valuable volunteers are. As part of the challenge, we’ll award three $2,000 grants to participating nonprofit organizations in Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton and Colleton Counties.

Join us to celebrate the diversity and compassion of all our #LowcountryVolunteers2019 by sharing with the public how you thank your volunteers and recognize their service to your organization.

Here’s how the challenge works

This challenge is on Community Foundation of the Lowcountry’s Facebook page.

Show the Lowcountry how much you love your volunteers! Write a brief description and post a photo or short video of how you recognized and celebrated your volunteers during the month of April.

Be creative and have fun with your volunteers. The recognition “event” does not need to be expensive or elaborate, but it does need to occur between April 1-30, 2019.

When you post your recognition event on our Facebook page during the April challenge, be certain to tag your organization’s Facebook page. Encourage your volunteers to “like” our page and leave us a message.

Tag your post using #LowcountryVolunteers2019 and make sure to set your post to “public” so we can re-post them.

We encourage you to post multiple times during the month, but multiple posts will not increase your chances to win.

And the $2,000 winners are…!

In early May, three organizations will be randomly selected from the pool of eligible organizations and each one will receive a $2,000 award.

If your agency is selected as one of the three winners, there are two additional chances in increase the award:

  • $500 Bonus for SoLo-SCAVA members: If your agency is selected to win the award and it is a current member of SoLo-SCAVA, you will receive an additional $500. Be sure to tag SoLo-SCAVA on your post.
  • $500 Bonus Award for using Lowcountry Volunteer Connections: If your agency is selected to win the award and it posted a new volunteer need on Lowcountry Volunteer Connections during the month of April, you will receive an additional $500.

To be eligible to win your agency must be registered on Lowcountry Volunteer Connections.  Ensure your agency is registered on Lowcountry Volunteer Connections so you can share your service opportunities with our nearly 800 registered users.

Contact Debbie Cahoon with any questions about creating or updating your organization’s profile on Lowcountry Volunteer Connections.

Start now

Start planning your volunteer recognition activity now. Need ideas or resources, check out Energize! or search Google for tips from colleagues, books and other ideas on recognizing volunteer service.

The challenge begins Monday, April 1 (no fooling!) and ends Tuesday, April 30 at 5 p.m.  Recognition events and eligible posts must be made during that time frame, National Volunteer Month. Agencies that typically hold volunteer recognition events during other months should still participate, but we ask that you still do something during April to celebrate volunteer service. It can be an eblast, “thank you” poster almost anything.

The three winning organizations will be notified and receive their awards in early May.

The Fine Print

The award is for nonprofit 501(c)3 organizations in Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper Counties only.

Agencies are encouraged to post information about their volunteer recognition efforts throughout the month of April, but multiple posts will not increase your chances to win.

Community Foundation of the Lowcountry will make the determination on the validity of the posts and eligibility of the organizations. Its decision will be final.

Final note

We hope this award program will inspire all nonprofit agencies to recognize the service volunteers do to help achieve the agency’s mission and celebrate it during National Volunteer Month — and throughout the year.

If your role includes volunteer recruitment, training and/or management, you may want to join the local chapter of the South Carolina Association for Volunteer Administration (SCAVA), a professional association of your fellow volunteer administrators: Southern Lowcountry SCAVA.   Membership is $35 per year and your first meeting is free.
