Community Foundation of the Lowcountry Awards Grants To Five Local Organizations

November 16, 2015
Community Foundation of the Lowcountry awarded a $1,000 grant to each of five local nonprofit organizations which were randomly selected from the pool of organizations with completed profiles in the Community Foundation ’s online database, The Giving Marketplace.

The five nonprofits are:
• Santa Elena Project Foundation, Beaufort
• Helping Hand Center, Pineland
• First Books of Beaufort, Beaufort
• Love for Therapeutic Riding, Beaufort
• Boys & Girls Club of Hilton Head, Hilton Head Island

The Giving Marketplace is a web-based initiative providing detailed, comprehensive information about 501(c)(3) organizations in Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton and Colleton Counties. It ’s an effective tool for donors and funders to use as they make informed giving decisions. Each nonprofit profile includes extensive information about financial, programmatic, operational, governance and management practices.

The opportunity to be awarded a grant was first announced to nonprofits in mid-August as a way to encourage them to create a profile on The Giving Marketplace. “The Giving Marketplace serves as an important tool for our community to make informed giving decisions, ” said Denise Spencer, president and CEO of Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, “so it ’s important that the database is populated with many profiles. The process of completing a profile can be somewhat arduous, so we wanted to provide nonprofits with an incentive. ”

Spencer said that from the time the grant drawing was announced to the date the nonprofits were selected, the database experienced a 40 percent increase in the number of profiles created.

In The Giving Marketplace, each nonprofit creates a profile that is unique to its organization. Each profile includes general information and, more importantly, specific information about programs that can include measurements, impact and outcomes. Profiles also contain detailed information about operations, finances, management and governance.

Individuals can sign on to The Giving Marketplace through a link on the Community Foundation ’s website, and search for an organization either by its name or by its type. They can compare local nonprofits, print easy-to-read summaries and even see video clips and the organization ’s printed materials if those items have been included by the nonprofit in its profile.

The Giving Marketplace is the locally-branded version of DonorEdge, a program developed by Guidestar, a highly trusted source of information about local, national and international nonprofit organizations. Community Foundation of the Lowcountry is one of only 16 foundations across the country utilizing this DonorEdge technology.
