The program is best suited for established nonprofit organizations whose executive directors manage staff, volunteers or both. Participants explore not only the practical responsibilities of nonprofit leadership, but also how their own communication styles, behaviors and responses affect the people and organizations they lead.

A central focus of the program is the executive director’s “use of self”—developing the self-awareness needed to communicate effectively, make sound decisions, manage conflict and stress, influence others and lead through change. Participants learn to recognize patterns in their interactions, understand how they contribute to workplace dynamics and make more intentional leadership choices.

Led by Neil Sklarew, an experienced organizational psychologist and executive coach, the program combines peer learning with individualized coaching. Participants meet as a small cohort for group learning sessions and work one-on-one with Neil to establish personal development goals, receive feedback and apply their learning to real organizational challenges.

Through the program, executive directors strengthen their ability to:

  • Manage and develop staff and volunteers
  • Communicate and make decisions more effectively
  • Navigate conflict, stress and organizational change
  • Work productively with boards and other key stakeholders
  • Recognize leadership patterns and organizational barriers
  • Turn greater self-awareness into stronger organizational results

The current cohort will complete the program in June 2027. Applications for the next cohort, beginning in July 2027, will open in April 2027.
